I was purchasing another piece of furniture from a seller on Marketplace when I spied this chest of drawers among several other items they had for sale.  I thought it looked like something you’d see in a castle on the HBO series Game of Thrones.  Kahl Drogo, played by Jason Mamoa, is a warlord in the show so it seemed natural to name this extremely masculine, medieval-looking piece of furniture after him.  Just look at those spiked metal straps on each side and the enormous handles on the two bottom drawers!  This is a well-made piece in good condition and the maker’s name is stamped inside the top drawer.  The drawers are on metal runners so they glide in and out with ease.

This is Kahl after his transformation, what do you think?

Kahl was in great condition other than some sticky substance that had spilled down the front of the drawers.  Probably blood from one of his battles!  😂 You just never know…   I donned my rubber gloves and gave it a good scrubbing and light sanding.

The top of the chest had a veneer that I think was supposed to look like leather.  I coated that slick surface with a primer before applying the base coat.  I chose Folk Art Home Decor chalk paint in a color called Castle.  How fitting for this piece, right?

I love the wood texture on the sides and drawer fronts.  To accentuate the wood grain, I applied a glaze that you brush on and wipe back, removing most of it from the surface, leaving just enough to settle into the wood grain.  To keep it from soaking into the chalk paint and looking too dark, I used a clear coat, allowing that to dry, before applying the glaze.

Even though the insides of the drawers were spotless, they were a tan color and that didn’t really go with the color scheme I had in mind for Kahl.  I primed the slick surface inside the drawers and then used Rustoleum Chalked in Icy Grey.

I used DecoArt metallic paint in Obsidion to refresh the metal accents on the chest.  I spray painted the hardware with Rustoleum spray paint in Metallic Soft Iron.
